THE GEMBA WALK

The term «Gemba» is derived from the Japanese and can roughly be translated as „the true place“. In context with the businessworld, «Gemba» is to be understood as the place where value is created. For example, for an automotive group, the production site for vehicles is the «Gemba». Similarly, in a service laboratory the individual laboratories are to be regarded as «Gemba». The concept of «Gemba Walk» was developed by Taiichi Ohno, the developer of the Toyota production system and pioneer of just-in-time production. The basic idea is based on the assumption that optimization possibilities can best be determined by observations directly on the spot1. The «Gemba Walk» is process-related and not personal. Specifically, the «Gemba Walk» is intended to enable managers and members of management to get to know the processes of value chain in detail and to optimize them on the basis of conscious observation and questioning.

All members of the INTERLABOR management have a scientific background and laboratory experience. The management has already performed various «Gemba Walks» with great enthusiasm. This has resulted in many ideas and suggestions for process optimization. Be it the more time-efficient design of work processes, the saving of paper printouts, the optimization of workplace cleaning or the improvement of analytical methods.

Bernhard Burn

CEO

BERNHARD BURN

My career at Interlabor began in 2004 in the field of trace analysis. Due to my many years of experience in instrumental analysis I was initially responsible for the development and optimization of gas chromatographic methods. My first major project at Interlabor was the expansion of the pharmaceutical raw materials division and the introduction of new analytical techniques such as headspace gas chromatography. I was not only able to apply my passion for troubleshooting and the organization of major projects to the analytical department but also to the move from Interlabor to the new company building in 2008.

"For me as a managing director and shareholder, Interlabor is a part of life."

In the new company headquarters, I built up an independent department for research and development projects and managed it until I joined the management team in 2015. I particularly appreciate the very entertaining work and the professional challenges at Interlabor. Every day, we receive new customer enquiries from a wide range of industries for which we develop tailor-made analysis strategies. As a chemist I am particularly interested in the structure of the ingredients of herbal medicines. Our high-resolution mass spectrometer, for example, enables to gain a deep insight into the chemistry of substances and makes me amazed again and again at the variety of chemical structures found in nature. For me as a managing director and shareholder, Interlabor is a part of life. It is therefore important to me that the joy and fun at work is not neglected. Therefore, I attach great importance to sharing my passion and enthusiasm for analytics with my employees and passing it on to them. My vision is that everyone in Switzerland with an analytical question first thinks of Interlabor as a problem solver.

CMO / Deputy CEO

OLIVIER AEBISCHER

After years as a production chemist and later as head of a pharmaceutical pilot production, I found a new challenge at Interlabor Belp AG in 2015. The transition from production to customer consulting opened up an exciting new world for me.

"The role as a liaison between demanding customer inquiries and technical feasibility in the laboratory fascinates me every day."

The broad spectrum of inquiries ranges from simple water analyses to the search for unknown degradation products in trace amounts, making every workday incredibly diverse. No day is the same, and each new day brings exciting challenges.

Over the years, I have been able to lead the areas of customer service, reception, sample management, and the LIMS team. This has resulted in numerous new projects and tasks being added to my scope of work, such as qualifying a climate chamber or organizing the logistics of a stability study.

As the next step in my career development, I was fortunate to become part of the management team and participate in the management buyout. I am always impressed by how quickly new ideas can be effectively implemented thanks to our flat hierarchy and how the employee is at the center of it all. Our company values - reliability, effectiveness, initiative, competence, appreciation, and passion - provide an excellent foundation for our motto: "Every employee should enjoy coming to work at Interlabor on 4 out of 5 days.

CFO

MARTIN JUNGO

After completing a commercial apprenticeship, I obtained the federal specialist certificate in finance and accounting. Following a few years in the fiduciary sector, I joined Interlabor Belp AG in 2014 as Head of Finance. The following year, I was also entrusted with the management of human resources. Initially, I joined Interlabor to fill the time before my world trip. However, the work and the people here captivated me so much that I stayed.

Regarding finances, we place great importance on earning our own money. It is not spent frivolously but is always thoughtfully considered on how best to use it. As a result, we are entirely independent and have no creditors. Just as in private life, as CFO, I can only manage the money we have actually earned. I quickly learned to handle a rolling budget, which aligns perfectly with my vision.

As for personnel, the employer has always been very socially responsible and treats employees very humanely. I was impressed from the beginning by the fact that leadership was not exerted through pressure but was willing to go the extra mile for the employees.

"Our goal is to be the "Best Lab," and for that, we need the best team."

It is not just about having the best individual player, but the best overall structure. We manage our personnel sustainably, and I am always ready to give more for this cause. The fact that two relatively young but not inexperienced individuals were chosen for the takeover showed me that sustainable thinking is in place. It is a daily joy for me to shape this future and be a special employer.

YANNICK ZIMMERMANN

After completing my studies in microbiology and earning a PhD in environmental analytics, I joined Interlabor Belp AG in 2016. I started in customer service and was soon entrusted with managing our largest client. The trust placed in me was formative for my career, and I now strive to extend the same trust to my employees.

"Interlabor allows me to take on responsibility in a pleasant working environment."

In my second role at the company, I had the opportunity to lead the Bioanalytics department, which encompasses a wide range of microbiological and biochemical techniques, as well as particle analyses. Many exciting customer projects and my first experience in leadership defined these years of learning. For several years now, I have been managing the Pharmaceutical Raw Materials department and have been a member of the management team. The shift to a department with chemical and physical analysis techniques broadened my perspective and helps me to oversee our interdisciplinary customer projects across departments.

I appreciate the diversity of my tasks, which range from organizing a large department, managing personnel, and interacting with clients, to solving daily challenges and engaging in strategic discussions aimed at the sustainable development of our company. It is incredibly enjoyable to work with so many highly motivated colleagues across all departments, developing new processes together to improve efficiency. It is rewarding to see everyone pulling in the same direction and embodying our company values.
